Lexus IS300 Exhaust Guide (2001 to 2005): Y-Pipe, Resonator, Catback, and What Each One Changes

The first generation IS300 is one of the last naturally aspirated inline six sedans Toyota built, and the 2JZ-GE under the hood deserves an exhaust that lets it breathe and sound like a straight six. The factory system does neither. This guide walks the exhaust from the manifold back, explains what each section does, and lays out the order most owners should upgrade in.

The IS300 exhaust, front to back

  1. Exhaust manifold and 3-bolt flange. The stock manifold meets the rest of the system at a 3-bolt flange. On a twenty year old car this flange is often rusted or cracked, and it is the starting point for any custom downpipe.
  2. Y-pipe, also called the midpipe. The section that runs from the manifold flange back under the car. On the IS300 this is where the restriction lives.
  3. Resonator pipe. The middle section that tunes out drone before the muffler.
  4. Catback. Everything from the catalytic converter back: resonator, muffler, and tailpipe. This is what you hear.

Step one: the Y-pipe (midpipe)

If you only do one thing, do this. Our IS300 Y-pipe / midpipe is mandrel bent 2.5 inch 304 stainless, fully TIG welded and back purged, with 3/8 inch laser cut flanges so the joint seals and stays sealed. It fits the stock location with no modification and includes an O2 bung. This is the piece that opens the engine up, and it is the reason the IS300 Y-pipe is the part most owners search for first.

Step two: the resonator pipe

The IS300 resonator pipe replaces the middle section in 2.5 inch mandrel bent 304 stainless with laser cut flanges, and drops into the stock location. It carries the flow gains from the Y-pipe through to the muffler. One fitment note from the product page: it does not bolt up to our axle-back sections, so plan the resonator pipe and catback together.

Step three: the catback

The IS300 2.5 inch catback is the sound. Mandrel bent 304 stainless, TIG welded and back purged, with a 12 inch resonator and a 17 inch oval muffler. The tone is deep and aggressive at throttle without droning on the highway, which is the balance most IS300 owners are after. Everything needed for installation comes in the box.

If you are building your own downpipe

Fabricators and owners with a swap or turbo project start at the manifold. Our IS300 3-bolt header flange is CNC finished 304 stainless cut to the 2JZ-GE bolt pattern. It bolts to the stock manifold, replaces a rusted original, and gives you a square, purgeable starting point for a custom midpipe. If you weld your own, our flange welding guide covers how to keep it flat.

Sound, drone, and the highway

Drone is a resonance, usually between 1,800 and 2,500 rpm on a cruise, and it is what people hate about cheap exhausts. The IS300 catback uses a resonator ahead of the muffler for exactly that reason. If you run the Y-pipe and resonator pipe with the stock muffler you will get more flow and a slightly deeper note with the factory quietness. Add the catback when you want the car to sound like a straight six.

Material: why 304 stainless

Most budget systems are 409 stainless, which is magnetic and rusts at the welds within a few years. Everything we build for the IS300 is 304 stainless, TIG welded and back purged so the inside of every joint is as clean as the outside. Our 304 vs 409 article goes into the metallurgy and what mandrel bent actually means.
