Lexus GX460 Exhaust Guide: Y-Pipe, Catback, Muffler Dump, and the P0420 Fix

The 2010 and newer GX460 runs Toyota's 4.6 liter 1UR-FE V8, a quiet, smooth engine that the factory exhaust keeps very quiet. Owners come to us for two reasons: they want the truck to sound like a V8, and they want clearance and durability for off-road use. This guide covers the parts we build for the GX460, what each one changes, and the order to do them in.

One thing up front: unlike the GX470, there is no headers product for the GX460. The upgrades start at the Y-pipe.

Step one: the Y-pipe

The GX460 Y-pipe replaces the restrictive factory piece that merges the two banks. It is 2.5 inch 304 stainless, TIG welded and back purged, with 3/8 inch flanges to prevent warping and a rotatable flange design that accommodates the differences between model years. Four alignment tabs at the center of each flange hold the gasket in place during installation.

Two design details matter for off-road owners. The Y-pipe extends past the transmission so it clears skid plates, and it uses a slip joint connection so installation does not become a fight. It is offered two ways:

  • Resonated: 2.5 inch, 12 inch long resonators on each bank to take the drone out.
  • Catted: high flow catalytic converters for owners who need to keep emissions equipment in place.

Step two: the modular catback

The modular catback fits the GX460, GX470, and V8 4Runner. It is 2.5 inch 304 stainless, TIG welded and back purged, with a 17 inch straight through muffler and a Helmholtz style resonator that keeps the note deep without highway drone. It is built to work with our Y-pipe and sits high for off-road clearance.

The modular part is the exit. Pick the one that fits how you use the truck:

  • Over-axle dump for the cleanest look and the most clearance behind the axle.
  • Rear exit in the stock location.
  • Side exit for a more aggressive look and sound.

Hardware and gaskets are included. The system does not include an exhaust tip, so pick one from the exhaust tips collection if your exit needs it.

The off-road alternative: the muffler dump

If the rear section of your exhaust keeps getting crushed on the trail, the muffler dump pipe moves the exit to just ahead of the rear axle. It is 304 stainless with 3/8 inch flanges and a 17 inch muffler, so you keep a deep tone with minimal drone and nothing hanging past the axle to catch on rocks.

Fixing P0420 after the exhaust work

A high flow exhaust can trip a P0420 or P0430 code because the downstream O2 sensor sees a different signal than the ECU expects, even with the catalytic converters working. The fix on most builds is an O2 sensor spacer, which moves the sensor slightly out of the exhaust stream. Suggested order

  1. Y-pipe first. It is the restriction and the biggest change in sound and flow.
  2. Catback or muffler dump second, depending on whether you want a full system or maximum trail clearance.
  3. O2 spacer if a code appears after the work.
